SHIPPING EVIDENCE

Your evidence package must meet USDOT requirements for shipping. Failure to adhere to USDOT regulations could result in fines and penalties. Furthermore, your package should not indicate that it contains evidence. Finally, your package should be shipped using a traceable method. If you use the US Postal Service, be sure to ship using certified or registered mail. Commercial companies such as Federal Express, United Parcel Service, DHL, etc., offer overnight delivery service for perishable shipments.

PERISHABLE EVIDENCE

Be sure that the package does not leak or have any odors.

Call the Evidence Unit to alert them that you are shipping perishable evidence.

Ship overnight or express delivery on Mondays or Tuesdays, so that they arrive during the work week.

LIVE AMMUNITION

You must contact the shipping company for details on preparing the shipping container, labeling the container and completing the manifest document for the ORM-D shipment. Refer to section 3.1.4.2 for packaging Live Ammunition.

PESTICIDES AND OTHER CHEMICALS

Ship via commercial carrier authorized by DOT to ship hazardous materials.  Suspected pesticides cannot be shipped by US Postal Service. Refer to section 3.1.3 for details on shipping these items.

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation 49 CFR Parts 171.1 states that:

“Requirements in the Hazardous Materials Regulations apply to each person who offers a hazardous material for transportation in commerce.” 

Furthermore, “Each person who knowingly violates a requirement of the Federal hazardous material transportation law....  is liable for a civil penalty of not more than $50,000 and not less than $250 for each violation.”
                       
Training Requirement:  DOT REGULATIONS REQUIRE THAT ANYONE SHIPPING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS BE TRAINED AND TESTED. The training is to include:

1. familiarity with the general provisions of the hazardous shipping regulations, 
2. function-specific instruction applicable to hazardous shipping duties performed by the employee, 
3. general knowledge of emergency response information, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures,
4. security awareness training to enhance transportation security.
